Initial Music Magazine Ideas

The working title I have chosen to use for my music magazine is ‘Unleashed!’ I decided to use this title because my magazine is going to be about fairly alterative music which can be quite energetic and has a stereotype of being aggressive and uncontainable.

The first demographic I looked at for my magazine was gender. I decided to aim my magazine at females as I felt there was a niche in the market for female magazines of this sort. The age I’d ideally like for my magazines target audience is 14 -19. This is because this is the age group I think it most likely to be interested in band news and gig reviews. Also I think people of this age group have more time to read magazines. This magazines intellectual level will be fairly average. It won’t be especially hard to read so it appeals to more people however it also won’t be dumbed down. This magazine will be based in England. The gig reviews will be from English venues but the bands could be from anywhere. However most of the time they should have at least gigged in England before as otherwise it will be a lot harder for readers to find out about them. I would not give my magazine an income demographic because teenagers are not normally the main source of income in a household so it’s difficult to classify them.

I have looked at the psychographic for my magazine in terms of the website ‘UK Tribes’. From this magazine I have found several ‘tribes’ that I think my magazine would appeal to. These are
‘Skaters’ http://www.uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=11
‘Scene Kids’ http://www.uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=10
‘Moshers’ http://www.uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=12
‘Grungers’ http://www.uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=13
‘Goths’ http://www.uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=14 and
‘Emos’ http://www.uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=9. This may seem like a wide variety of people however when it comes to bands there is a lot of overlapping. This is especially true of lesser known bands which have yet to be given a widely acknowledged genre label.

I have decided my magazine would be priced at £2.50. I have chosen this price because it is lower than some music magazines meaning demand should be higher however it is also high enough that there should be a profit. My magazine will be produced monthly. This is because I think it would become too expensive for the average to teenager to buy my magazine every week.

The content of my magazine will be similar to that of Kerrang in the sense it will have band news, band reviews, gig reviews etc. However it will also have different aspects such as more about non-famous bands and a more feminine angle. It will also cover a slightly different genre of music, it will cover more punk and alternative bands than Kerrang, which mainly deals with more mainstream pop punk bands.

My magazine will be similar in style to that of Kerrang and Metal Hammer. However instead of manly fonts and gestures my magazine will be more feminine. It will use pictures of bands that are famous, to attract attention, but also unknown ones which should make the target audience curious so they will read on. My magazines unique selling point is that it ill be aimed at females whereas most magazines which cover this genre of music are aimed at men.
